ARTFL stands for American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language. The ARTFL project is brought to you by the department of romance languages and literature at the University of Chicago. At machaut.uchicago.edu, you can find 4 useful tools for your language study including Webster’s dictionary, Roget’s thesaurus, a French-English dictionary and a French conjugator. If you are learning the French language, you may find these ARTFL free tools very useful. The free online dictionary contains approximately 75,000 entries. You can use this ARTFL dictionary to translate French words into English or vice versa. You can define the root and part of speech, None, Verb and Adjective, for instance. If you are a heavy user of their search tools, they also offer Firefox plugins at the same site so that you can use these tools directly from Firefox. With the plugins installed, you can highlight a word on a webpage, and press a QuickKey to access the tools.
